The National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) is the largest and most progressive student organization in the country, representing over 4 million students across 15,000 colleges and universities. As the student wing of the Indian National Congress (INC), NSUI provides a strong and democratic platform for students to voice their concerns, fight for their rights, and shape the national agenda.
Founded on April 9, 1971, by Smt. Indira Gandhi, NSUI has been at the forefront of student movements, advocating for quality education, affordable learning opportunities, inclusive policies, and campus democracy.
Recognizing the importance of youth participation in politics, Shri Rahul Gandhi introduced organizational reforms in 2007, making the NSUI leadership selection democratic, ensuring that committed grassroots workers could rise through the ranks based on merit.
Before NSUI’s formation, student activism within the Congress Party was mostly unstructured, and youth participation in politics was scattered. Recognizing the importance of organized student movements, Smt. Indira Gandhi merged two Congress-affiliated student organizations:

Since its inception, NSUI has played a pivotal role in student movements across India, from fighting for scholarships and reservations to protesting against education budget cuts and student welfare issues. The organization has also been instrumental in fighting against caste, gender, and religious discrimination within educational institutions.
Over the years, several prominent leaders who began their political journey in NSUI have gone on to hold important positions in Indian politics. This has made NSUI not just a student organization but a training ground for future political leadership.
